Several people were shot near the Old West End Festival in Toledo, Ohio, authorities said Saturday.
Officers are actively searching for the suspect or suspects involved in the incident after being called to the scene around 5:30 p.m. local time, the Toledo Police Department said.
“Many victims” were taken to area hospitals to receive medical care, Toledo police said in a Facebook post. There was no information available about the health status of the victims.
Police are asking people to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing. A large contingent of agents remains on site.
The Old West End Festival is an annual two-day event held in the city’s historic district, home to one of the world’s largest collections of Victorian-style homes.
This year’s program was scheduled to begin with a parade on Saturday morning and include live musical performances and gastronomic fairs.
Two festival attendees said they were enjoying the event when they heard and saw the panic spread. They described the scene as “general chaos,” according to what they reported to the CNNWTOL.
“As soon as I heard someone shout, ‘Everybody back,’ people started falling, stumbling. I couldn’t see what was happening, I couldn’t see anything,” said a man who asked not to be identified.
Another man who was with him, and who also requested anonymity, told WTOL that he heard at least 10 shots.
CNN has reached out to Toledo police seeking more information.
