This Sunday (7), the war in the Middle East completes 100 days without a definitive agreement being signed between the parties. Amid several violations of the , negotiations remain at an impasse, while Donald Trump claims that Washington and Tehran are very close to signing an understanding.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump declared that the main obstacle to closing the deal is Iran’s nuclear program.
According to him, Iran has already agreed not to develop a nuclear weapon in the future, but Trump considers that there is still a lack of sufficient guarantees against the possibility of the country acquiring uranium enriched by other means.
Disagreements between Washington and Tehran
The negotiation scenario is marked by contradictory versions. While the Americans claim to maintain daily contact with the Iranians, Tehran denies being in direct talks with Washington and says it is still evaluating proposals.
“Once again, Donald Trump is raising expectations for an agreement, an agreement that really isn’t easy. These are negotiations that usually take months, sometimes even years”, highlighted the correspondent for CNN in Washington, Mariana Janjácomo, when analyzing the impasse.
Trump also returned to the issue of uranium already enriched in Iran. He stated that, in the event of an agreement, the United States would help locate and destroy this material. Otherwise, it threatened to intensify attacks on Iranian military installations with the same objective.
At the same time, Trump softened his tone regarding Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, describing him as a better leader than the previous one, although he refused to confirm whether he knows where he currently is.
