Cold records are recorded in the South and Central-West of Brazil

The capitals of the South and Central-West of Brazil broke the cold record for 2026 in the early hours of last Saturday (6). An excessive drop in temperature was also observed in some places in the Northeast.

According to Climatempo, the early morning hours in the Southeast and Central-West will have weather similar to that observed on Saturday.

In the South, in some places in the Santa Catarina mountain range (SC), the . However, in several locations in the Southeast and Central West, temperatures below 10°C were recorded.

Alert in the South

The National Institute of Meteorology has issued a storm warning valid until 11:59 pm this Monday (8) for areas of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná. The warning has a severity level classified as “potential danger”.

According to the agency, there is a forecast of rain of between 20 and 30 mm per hour or up to 50 mm per day, in addition to intense winds of up to 60 km/h and the possibility of hail. The institute also warns of a low risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling tree branches and flooding.

The affected areas include regions such as Metropolitan Porto Alegre, Northwest and Northeast Rio Grande do Sul, West Santa Catarina and Southwest Paraná. INMET advises that the population avoid taking shelter under trees during gusts of wind and also avoid using electronic devices plugged into the socket.

There was a cold last morning and the little cloudiness at night was recorded as one of the lowest temperatures in Brazil and is still spreading throughout the regions.

The highest areas of Santa Catarina recorded new negative temperatures and, in all states in the Southeast, the climate was close to or below 10°C. However, in Serra da Mantiqueira.

Climatempo also highlights that the significant radiative loss, caused by the lack of clouds at night, caused intense cooling in the Central-West region.

In Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Goiás (GO) and the Federal District (DF), there were climates below 10°C and others slightly above in areas up to Mato Grosso (MT).

Record cold

The capitals Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Vitória and Goiânia recorded the lowest temperatures of 2026, with the coldest dawn of the year.

In the Vila Militar region, west of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), temperatures of up to 12.5°C were recorded, with a previous record in May, with 12.9°C

In Pampulha, in Belo Horizonte, the record was set at 8.8°C. Its previous record is last Thursday (4), with 12.9°C.

In Vitória, Saturday reached 14.8°C, surpassing the last record set on May 30, when the temperature recorded was 16.4°C.

In Goiânia, the record was set at 11.3°C, surpassing the record at the beginning of May, which was 13.1°C.
