Germany’s new 7-1, this time over Curaçao, this Sunday (14), once again hit Brazil. With the new victory, the German team became the highest scorer in the history of the World Cup, even with fewer participations than the Brazilian team.
The five-time Brazilian champions, who participated in all editions of the tournament organized by FIFA, led the list with 238 goals in 115 matches. Now, the four-time German champions, who only did not play in 1930 and 1950, number 239.
The European team overtook Brazil in terms of goals scored in World Cups by beating Brazil 7-1 in 2014. The Brazilian team regained its lead in the round of 16 of the Russian Cup in 2018, beating Mexico 2-0. Germany did not progress past the first round in that edition nor in the following one, in Qatar, in 2022.
At the start of the current edition of the World Cup, the score was 237 to 232 for Brazil.
On the side of Curaçao, debutant in the World Cup, the good news was the goal scored against one of the powerhouses of world football, in Group E.
Ivory Coast 1 x 0 Ecuador
In the other duel in Group E, Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0, with Diallo, 44 minutes into the second half.
The goal came when everything indicated that the match would be the first goalless match in the World Cup, but a quick move by defender Singo, spinning on top of the defense and escaping at speed towards the attack, provided the chance for Diallo to score, with a left-footed shot into goalkeeper Galíndez’s right corner.
From the beginning, the match was very busy, with real scoring opportunities for both teams.
In the first half, Ecuador had the best chances, hitting goalkeeper Fofana’s crossbar twice. In the second half, both teams hit the post once each.
In the next round, the Germans and Ivorians will duel for the leadership of the group, at 8pm on Saturday (20). Curaçao faces Ecuador at 9pm on the same day to see who will continue to have a chance of qualifying.
Sweden 5 x 1 Tunisia
In Group F, Sweden showed great offensive power and beat Tunisia 5-1, in Guadeloupe, Mexico, in the early hours of this Monday (15).
Despite the score, the game had a good technical level, with both teams showing a lot of organization on the field, skilled players and good aim.
The highlights of the match were midfielder Ayari, who scored the first and last goals for the Swedes, and striker Isak, who scored a goal and provided two assists. With great mobility, he played freely on both sides of the pitch and gave the Tunisian defense a lot of work.
The other Swedish goals came from Gyökeres and Svanberg, the latter on his first touch of the ball after replacing Karlstrom. For Tunisia, he scored Rekik.
Netherlands 2 x 2 Japan
In the other game in Group F, Corinthians idol Memphis Depay came on in the middle of the second half in the lively debut between the Netherlands and Japan. The 2-2 draw was fair in the match played at the modern Dallas Cowboys stadium, in the NFL (American football league).
After a goalless first half, the Netherlands opened the scoring at the beginning of the second half with Van Dijk, but the Japanese equalized afterwards, with Nakamura. The European team took the lead again with Summerville. Almost at the end, he suffered another draw: Kamada.
