European Parliament approves tariff cuts on US products

The European Parliament this Tuesday (June 16, 2026) reduced import tariffs on industrial products from the United States. The decision complies with the 5 between the European Union and the North American president, (Republican Party).

The measure avoids a new tariff escalation. Trump would raise tariffs on European cars and trucks from 15% to 25% if the bloc did not implement its part of the agreement by July 4.

The regulatory proposal was approved by 440 votes in favor, 151 against and 50 abstentions. With the decision, tariffs on all industrial products in the United States were eliminated.

The agreement also guarantees preferential access to the European market for a wide range of North American agricultural and seafood products. In return, the US must apply 15% tariffs on most European Union products.

Europeans will be able to suspend tariff preferences if the US maintains, until December 31, 2026, tariffs above 15% on EU steel and aluminum derivatives.

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have established a safeguard mechanism for cases in which the agreement causes serious damage to the bloc’s industry, including the agricultural sector.

A comprehensive assessment of trade effects is expected to be completed by June 2029.

On the social network X, the president of the European Commission, welcomed the approval of the measure. “A deal is a deal – and the EU is doing its part”.
