G7 leaders are calling the US framework agreement with Iran a historic chance to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and bring more peace and security to the region.
Leaders of states and governments of the G7 countries consider the framework agreement between the US and Iran a “historic opportunity” to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. This follows from their statement published on Wednesday, which TASR informs about according to the report of the DPA agency.
The agreement between Washington and Tehran, which both sides are expected to sign on Friday, could bring “peace and security for all in the region,” the joint statement said. The leaders also expressed support for the implementation and readiness to contribute to its fulfillment.
Strait of Hormuz and trade
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the G7 reiterated that the right to free passage without restrictions or tolls is fundamental to international trade.
The G7 leaders added that it was now essential to negotiate a follow-up comprehensive diplomatic deal that would address “threats that Iran poses in the region and beyond” and ensure that the Islamic Republic never acquires a nuclear weapon.
Criticism of Hezbollah
In the event of a conflict between Israel and the Tehran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, the G7 group said it supports efforts by the Lebanese leadership to disarm Hezbollah through an immediate and firm ceasefire and to protect Lebanon’s territorial integrity “with adequate international security guarantees.”
