43-year-old man is arrested for “taking prisoners and carrying a prohibited weapon”. He is the son of Fernando Ferreira, one of the September 2024 escapees.
The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested this Tuesday, in Lisbon, a man suspected of having collaborated in the murder of five prisoners in the Vale de Judeus prison, in 2024, and seized a firearm, the police force announced.
According to , the detainee is the son of Fernando Ferreira, or Fernando “Careca”, who escaped from jail that day along with four other prisoners and was the first to be arrested almost three months after he escaped.
“The Judiciary Police, through the National Counter-Terrorism Unit, proceeded, today, in the Greater Lisbon area, to arrest a man, of Portuguese nationality, aged 43, who has strong evidence of committing the crimes of taking prisoners and detaining a prohibited weapon”, explained the PJ, in .
During the “Sapatada” operation, carried out by the Central Section for Combating Banditry, seven house searches were also carried out and 25 defendants.
According to SIC, one of the targets of the searches was the wife of Fábio Loureiro, known as Fábio “Cigano”, captured in Morocco.
The detainee will be presented, this Thursday, to the competent judicial authority, for the first judicial interrogation and possible application of coercive measures deemed appropriate, says the PJ.
It was at the beginning of September 2024 that five fugitives, with the help of a ladder and external help that was confirmed, were arrested from the Vale de Judeus prison. Three men were already waiting for them outside, with a Mercedes at the door, used in the escape.
