How I survived 24 hours in the Styrian wilderness


Now things are getting tight for the survivors. 60-year-old Hermann, his two sons and two other male relatives are in danger of dying of thirst at 1,100 meters above sea level in a forest near Mautern in Upper Styria. Seven hours ago, after a forced march, they finally reached a clearing. A hot, sunny day is coming to an end, with no rushing stream or gurgling spring within earshot. The five seem exhausted from building their emergency shelter and ask themselves: Should we have prepared ourselves better for this exceptional situation?
