Delegations from the United States and Iran agreed on a roadmap aimed at achieving a definitive peace agreement within a maximum period of 60 daysa step that represents the first major advance since the signing of the memorandum of understanding that ended more than three months of armed conflict.

The announcement was made through a joint statement released by Qatar and Pakistancountries that have acted as mediators in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran. According to the text, both parties have decided to create a High Level Committee in charge of supervising the process and coordinating the conversations that should lead to a final agreement.

The meeting took place in the tourist complex of Bürgenstock, in the Swiss Alps, where American and Iranian representatives held a first day of contacts that the mediators described as “positive and constructive” and that made it possible to achieve “encouraging progress.”

As part of the agreement, lead negotiators will lead several specialized working groups. Among them, one focused on the Iranian nuclear program stands out, another dedicated to the lifting of sanctions and a third in charge of supervising the application of the memorandum of understanding already signed by both countries.

In addition, a specific monitoring mechanism has been created to guarantee compliance with the cessation of military operations in Lebanon, one of the most sensitive points of the process after months of clashes in the region.

Technical conversations throughout the week

The statement confirms that technical talks will continue in the coming days in Switzerland with the aim of finalizing the details of the future agreement.

Although the mediators have not specified who will participate in these meetings, they have explained that progress will be periodically transferred to the High Level Committee to evaluate compliance with the established deadlines.

Another of the agreements reached contemplates the creation of a direct line of communication between Washington and Tehran aimed at avoiding incidents and misunderstandings, especially in relation to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the reopening of which constitutes one of the central elements of the process.

Tensions despite diplomatic progress

The negotiations were not without difficulties. The Iranian delegation temporarily interrupted the day in protest against statements by US President Donald Trump, who warned Tehran that it must prevent its Hezbollah allies from causing incidents in Lebanon.

Despite this, a US source later assured that the Iranian representatives remained in Switzerland and that the talks continued throughout the night. “Contrary to the false information that is widely circulating, the Iranians are still here and the talks continue,” said that source.

The Iranian delegation is headed by the president of Parliament and chief negotiator Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, accompanied by the Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchí. On the US side, the talks are led by Vice President JD Vance.

The immediate objective is to convert into a permanent agreement the understanding reached after the war that began on February 28, a conflict that altered the regional balance, caused the temporary closure of the and triggered a serious international energy crisis.
