Deutsche Bahn is gradually restoring traffic across Germany after a massive outage in the communication system. However, significant train delays await passengers.
Deutsche Bahn has begun gradually resuming train services after temporarily suspending operations across the country on Tuesday evening due to a communication system failure. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.
The state-owned rail operator said it had determined the cause of the malfunction and that employees were working to fix it. However, he has not yet provided further details.
Traffic recovery continues
Regional and commuter rail operators within Deutsche Bahn said on Wednesday that service was gradually resuming, but warned that significant delays and disruptions were likely to continue into Wednesday morning.
The company previously said there was a nationwide failure of the GSM-R digital communications system used for internal communications within the rail network.
Measures for passengers
Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla also said at the time that the company was trying to get trains into stations so passengers could get off safely.
The company subsequently informed that it provides vouchers for taxis and hotel accommodation to passengers.
The outage also affected some suburban train services operated by Deutsche Bahn, including the entire Berlin S-Bahn network.
Local operators in several cities reported service suspensions or service delays, while other city transport systems, including Hamburg’s metro, continued to operate without restrictions.
The outage also affected private railway carriers. Metronom, which operates regional passenger transport in northern Germany, said the disruption affected all of its trains.
