Can you imagine that a combination of natural active ingredients, such as propolis, cranberry, aloe vera, green tea, chamomile and calendula, in contact with teeth and gums at night can act against bacterial plaque, and also improve gum sensitivity? The discovery comes from a Brazilian dentist, Dr Eder Gonzaga de Oliveira, who developed the Desplac tooth gel.
Unlike conventional toothpastes, which contain silica and are recommended for mechanical use during brushing, the gel was formulated for prolonged action, without causing burning or irritation to the oral mucosa.
The starting point was a recurring complaint from patients who used orthodontic aligners: waking up with bad breath and without the feeling of a clean mouth after hours of using the device overnight. According to the specialist, this occurs because the aligners retain part of the saliva next to the teeth during sleep, favoring the proliferation of bacteria, the increase in bad odor and the formation of dental biofilm. Over time, this process can trigger gum inflammation and increase the risk of developing periodontal disease.
“What we observed in clinical practice is that there was an important gap in oral care, especially during the night. By acting at this time, DesPlac not only resolves real discomfort, but expands the way we understand oral hygiene”, says Dr. Eder.
Studies carried out over two years by researchers linked to USP in Ribeirão Preto demonstrated that the combination of these active ingredients acts in a complementary way in the oral environment, helping to modulate bacterial activity, interfere with the organization of the biofilm and reduce gingival inflammatory processes. The formula is composed of approximately 77% natural ingredients, has a pH of 6.8 and is free of fluoride, parabens, triclosan, silicone, abrasives and detergents.
As research progressed, DesPlac now has two versions: one for daily brushing, aimed at controlling plaque and gum health, and another developed for users of aligners and intraoral devices, with prolonged action during the night.
Actor as ambassador
Actor Daniel Rocha says he accepted the invitation to be an ambassador after trying the product. According to him, the decision was influenced by a personal experience. “When they asked me to be an ambassador, I said: ‘Man, let me use the product’. I have very sensitive gums, I’ve been taking care of them for years, I do everything right, I use dental tape, and yet I’ve always had sensitivity”, he says.
After starting use, Daniel claims to have noticed an improvement in his condition. “I started using it and saw my gums improving. My father, who is a dentist, also observed this evolution”, he says. Interested in understanding the technology behind the product, he took scientific studies related to the development of the formula to his father.
The oral care category is experiencing a transformation driven by consumers who are more aware of their health. The focus, previously concentrated on freshness and whitening, makes room for solutions that deliver effectiveness, safety and continuous protection of the oral cavity. “We are building a category, a deeper movement, which involves education, clinical practice and behavior change”, says CEO Eduardo Zaborowski, who is the son of actress Viviane Pasmanter and businessman Gilberto Zaborowski.

Robotic knee surgery
The first robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery with technology developed in China and adapted to the national market by Biomecanica. The procedure, knee surgery performed in a public hospital, combines international technology transfer and product implants in the country, expanding the perspectives of access to innovation in the SUS.
“The technology works as a support tool for the surgeon, who maintains total control over the procedure. The system assists in pre-operative planning and provides real-time information during surgery, contributing to greater precision in the positioning of implants and more predictability of results”, says Ana Carolina Pengo, CVO at Biomecanica.
