The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, said this Thursday that at least 164 people died and almost 1,000 were injured after strong earthquakes hit the country.
Delcy Rodríguez added that an initial fund of US$200 million will be created, using resources from the International Monetary Fund, to rebuild infrastructure, hospitals and housing.
The interim president declared a state of emergency and confirmed that the earthquakes caused damage in several parts of the country.
“Dozens of buildings collapsed there, about 30 kilometers north of Caracas, and we are carrying out intensive rescue operations to save lives,” said the Venezuelan leader.
