World Cup: Mexicans sing homophobic chant at Azteca – 06/25/2026 – Sport

The fans chanted the homophobic chant for which their country has already been sanctioned by FIFA at Wednesday’s (24) World Cup game against the Czech Republic.

The cry of “puto” (a pejorative way of referring to homosexuals) was heard in the first half of the match. It was in the 10th minute, when the opposing goalkeeper, Maej Kovar, took a goal kick at the Azteca stadium, AFP journalists found.

Mexico has already received fines for these homophobic chants, which recur at Mexican national team games.

In June alone, the FIFA court ratified two fines of US$76,000 (around R$395,900) and US$100,000 (R$520,900).

The local federation has said in the past that it has made “the greatest possible efforts to educate, prevent and eradicate” such expression.
