Flávio’s performance in the USA is regrettable, says Finance Minister

Durigan claims that PL pre-candidate fails to comply with the Constitution by seeking “attack ammunition” for Brazil abroad

The Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, classified the performance of the pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic and senator (PL) in the United States as “regrettable”. Asked by journalists in Beijing about the congressman’s request to Washington to register for the public hearing that will be held on July 6 and will deal with the tariffs announced against Brazil, the minister said that the pre-candidate goes over Brazilian institutions and harms the country.

Durigan stated that Flávio violates the Brazilian Constitution every time he nods to the USA and that his dialogues with North American authorities only resulted in losses, not only for the federal government, but for Brazilian companies.

“You cannot use an actor that has headquarters and profitability abroad to finance a campaign that takes place in Brazil, this is prohibited by our Constitution and what today’s opposition candidate does is exactly that, seek elements, financing, foundations, ammunition to attack Brazil abroad”declared Durigan.

Regarding North American tariffs, the minister stated that they are “unfair” and ruled out the possibility that they would exert pressure on the work of the Ministry of Finance.

Durigan’s trip to China had the main objective of sealing the agreement with the Chinese central bank to issue debt securities in yuan, the Chinese currency.

This movement to seek alternatives to the dollar was made during one of the moments of greatest tension between Brazil and the United States in recent decades. The North American president (Republican Party) is a strong opponent of financial operations between countries that avoid the dollar.

Durigan said his economic team carried out a risk analysis on the impacts that the issuance of bonds in yuan could have on the relationship with the United States.

He stated that he spoke with diplomats to evaluate possible scenarios, but that the hammer in favor of the operation was dropped because it was a “sovereign decision” of the Brazilian government to diversify its funding sources and open doors for Brazilian companies in China.

In addition to opening up a wider range of funding possibilities to pay off debts, the Brazilian government wants to signal companies to also issue issues in yuan to strengthen their presence in the Chinese market.

Durigan said that Vale and Weg are among the companies evaluating adherence to Panda Bonds. To date, only Suzano has issued debt in yuan.

FLÁVIO GOES TO THE USA

The former president’s son (PL) stated on Tuesday (June 23) that he asked to participate in the North American hearing. Said he will “to defend Brazilian companies, so that they are not charged an additional 25% on exported products”.

Flávio’s office announced that the congressman signed up to speak for 5 minutes at the hearing. The senator’s presence does not yet appear on the list of those registered for the hearing, which is not updated in real time. To participate in the hearing, it is necessary to submit the request by July 1st.
