Videos posted on social media show the moment a building collapses on Wednesday, 24th.
One of the records was published by Cuban influencer and political activist Cristian Crespo, and shows a building falling in the El Junquito region, located approximately 30 km from Caracas, capital of Venezuela.
In other images it is possible to see the despair of the people who were at Maiquetía International Airport: rush, structures collapsing and power cuts. The earthquake was the strongest recorded in the country in more than a century, according to historical data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
According to the agency, the last earthquake of greater intensity occurred on October 29, 1900, when an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.7 hit the region north of Caracas and caused significant damage.
This week’s disaster began with a 7.2 magnitude tremor registered at 6:04 pm (local time), about 200 kilometers west of the Venezuelan capital. Minutes later, a second magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the region, followed by a series of aftershocks. The USGS classified the event as a catastrophe with the potential to cause major impacts.
Itamaraty reported that so far there are no Brazilians among those killed and injured in the earthquake.
