An Australian was detained by Thai police after the body of a 17-year-old girl was found in a suitcase near the track. Investigators are awaiting an autopsy and gathering more evidence.

Thai police have arrested an Australian citizen who found the dead body of a 17-year-old girl in his suitcase. The suspect denies involvement in her alleged kidnapping and murder, and was taken into custody after questioning, a police official in the resort town of Pattaya told AFP, writes TASR.

Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy and “further evidence” before officially filing charges. Media reported that the 46-year-old suspect was detained on Friday at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, where he was trying to buy a ticket to Perth, Australia.

According to security camera footage, the suspect entered an apartment in the Pattaya resort town with a 17-year-old Thai girl in the early hours of Thursday morning. A few hours later, he left there with a large black suitcase, which he then transported on a motorcycle. Police found a suitcase near a railway line on Friday containing the victim’s dead body with signs of violence, the Pattaya News website reported. Thailand last month radically reduced the length of visa-free stays for tourists following a series of arrests of foreigners for drug offences, sex trafficking and operating unlicensed businesses.
