More than 1,300 deaths in Europe are linked to intense heat, says WHO

The (World Health Organization) stated this Sunday (June 28, 2026) that more than 1,300 deaths recorded in Europe since June 21, 2026 are linked to the strong heat that hits the continent.

“Heat stress is often called the ‘silent killer’ and Europe’s homes, workplaces and schools were not made for these temperatures“, the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom, in his profile on X.

Tedros also stated that Europe is the continent whose temperature is rising the fastest on the planet.

“Right now, 150 million people are living in extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are closed, power grids are overloaded.”wrote the director general of the WHO.

HEAT IN FRANCE

The French public health agency, Public health Francethis Sunday (June 28) there was an increase in the number of daily deaths in regions that are under alert due to the heat.

Public Health France recorded more than 1,200 deaths from all causes on June 24 and more than 1,400 on June 25 and 26. The average was 900 to 1,000 deaths per day in April and May.

The death toll rose in hospitals, nursing homes and in homes, especially in the Île-de-France region.

The data is not consolidated. The system relies on the registration of death certificates and typically accounts for around 60% of national mortality. The prospect is for a real mortality rate higher than the numbers suggest.
