The mechanism of action of vinegar in laundry: how it softens water and protects fabrics

The secret to vinegar’s effectiveness lies in its slightly acidic reaction. Acetic acid perfectly neutralizes hard water by dissolving mineral deposits (mainly calcium and magnesium), which are responsible for the stiffness and roughness of materials. Thanks to this, vinegar not only prevents the accumulation of scale in the washing machine, but above all makes fabric fibers naturally soft and pleasant to the touch. Additionally, it helps rinse out detergent residues, protects colors from fading and prevents static electricity in clothes, especially synthetic ones.
