Romanian soldiers destroyed fragments of an apparently Russian drone found near the border with Ukraine. The discovery of explosives once again increases tension in the NATO border.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday that it carried out a controlled and safe explosion in the village of Rachelu, near the border with Ukraine, of parts of a possibly Russian drone that were found on the territory there. Reuters, cited by TASR, refers to the department’s statement.
- The Romanian army detonated parts of a presumably Russian drone near Rachel in a controlled manner.
- The wreckage was discovered by a local resident, and after the report, army specialists intervened.
- The analysis suggests the use of a drone by Russia in the April attacks on Ukrainian ports.
- Romania recorded at least twenty-nine airspace violations by Russian drones.
- A Russian drone hit a house in Galati, slightly injuring a woman and a boy.
According to the ministry, the debris was discovered by a local resident who reported the discovery to the authorities. It turned out that the fragments of the drone contained explosives, which required their disposal on the spot under the supervision of army specialists.
Below the threshold of nervousness
According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, a preliminary analysis indicates that these are parts of a drone used by Russia in attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure in April this year. More detailed conclusions of the investigation have not yet been published.
Romania, which is a NATO member state, shares a border with Ukraine that is more than 600 kilometers long. Since the beginning of the Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, Romanian authorities have recorded violations of their airspace by Russian drones at least 29 times.
Repeated incidents
As many as fifteen of these cases are registered by the authorities during this year. Incidents repeatedly raise questions about the safety of residents living in border areas and the risks of military operations in Ukraine intermingling with the territory of the member states of the alliance.
At the end of May, a Russian drone directly hit the roof of a residential building in the port city of Galati in eastern Romania. According to the information so far, a 53-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy suffered minor injuries in this attack.
