The president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, announced a national holiday this Tuesday (30) for the population to celebrate the team’s qualification to the round of 16 of the World Cup.
On Monday afternoon (29), coach Gustavo Alfaro’s men overcame favorite Germany on penalties and secured themselves in the next knockout stage of the competition.
Shortly after the final whistle, Peña published a message on the social network X with an expletive at the end: “Paraguay never surrenders! Holiday w…!”
According to the Paraguayan press, there is a law in the country that gives the president the right to declare up to three national holidays during the year.
The last one decreed was on December 26th last year, to extend the year-end holiday and stimulate the country’s economy, but the previous one had taken place on September 5th, the day after Paraguay’s qualification for the World Cup was confirmed.
Therefore, the president’s message was received with greater celebration by the population. In the comments on his post, many thanked the president and others asked him to publicize the decree.
On Instagram, Peña also played a video with the fans celebrating in the streets of the capital Asunción after the victory over Germany.
