Ethanol is more advantageous than gasoline in only 5 states, says ANP

In March 23-29, biofuel was more competitive in Sao Paulo, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Goiás

Hydrated ethanol was more competitive than gasoline in 5 states in March 23-29. In the average of the surveyed posts, ethanol cost 68.35% of the price of gasolineaccording to a survey by (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) compiled by AE-Taxa.

To be competitive, ethanol needs to be sold for less than 70% of the price of gasoline. This percentage is adopted as a reference by the market, since biofuel has less heat capacity – energy duty released during combustion.

The 70% reflect the difference between power generation in the burning of 2 fuels. To travel the same distance, more ethanol is spent. Below parity, the lower the percentage, the more competitive the alcohol is.

Here’s the states where ethanol is more competitive:

  • São Paulo: 67,59%;
  • Paraná: 68,67%;
  • Mato Grosso do Sul: 66,29%;
  • Mato Grosso: 64,64%; e
  • Goiás: 69,73%.

VARIATION

Hydrated ethanol prices recorded a drop in 18 states and the Federal District, an increase in 5 states and stability in 3 federative units.

At the posts surveyed by ANP, the average national price of ethanol fell 0.92% compared to the previous week, reaching R $ 4.32 per liter. In São Paulo, the largest producer and consumer in the country, the average price retreated 0.48%, to R $ 4.17 per liter.

The main regional variations were:

  • Higher high: em Rondôniathe biofuel registered an increase of 1.70%, with the liter at R $ 5.39;
  • Greatest fall: na Bahiathe price fell 4.71%, reaching R $ 4.65 per liter;

  • Lowest State Price: R $ 4.04 per liter in Mato Grosso; e
  • Highest state price: R $ 5.48 per liter no Amazonas.

Price behavior remains influenced by factors such as sugarcane, oil quotes and fuel pricing policy in the domestic market.
