Representatives of the CDU/CSU Christian Party Block and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) signed a coalition agreement on Monday in Berlin. According to DPA, the leaders of the parties opened the way for the advent of a new government under the leadership of the future office of Friedrich Merza from CDU, writes TASR.
SPD, CDU and CSU leaders signed a 144-page coalition agreement entitled Liability for Germany, which outlines the program of the new government and also regulates the distribution of ministries. The Parties agreed on the creation of the coalition on April 9, almost seven weeks after the early parliamentary elections in which the CDU/CSU block won.
The coalition parties are waiting for the first joint test on Tuesday, when Merz will apply for an office in the Batch Assembly. In this post he will replace Olaf Scholz from SPD. Merz needs an absolute majority to be elected, at least 316 votes in the 630-member lower chamber of the German Parliament (Bundestag). The coalition parties have only a tight majority with 328 deputies.
SPD Lars Klingbeil co -chairman becomes vice -champion and finance minister. Boris Pistorius, who held the post in the Scholz government, will remain as Minister of Defense. The outgoing office will not be part of the new cabinet, but will remain in Parliament as a Member.
According to DPA, the new government is exposed to a number of challenges, such as a weakened German economy and dilapidated infrastructure, up to the threat to European security by Russia and the step of the United States President Donald Trump. The coalition promised to revive the declining economy and the renewal of the army at a time when the White House head challenges the future of transatlantic security and business relationswrites AFP.
Merz also promised to limit illegal migration and stop the rise of an anti -imgration alternative for Germany (AfD). In the February early parliamentary elections, she finished second with almost 21 percent of the vote and won 152 parliamentary seats in the 736-member Federal Assembly.
The future office, who has no experience in the government’s leadership, promised “strong, thoughtful and reliable governance” on Monday’s signing of the coalition agreement. “We live in times of deep changes, great shocks … and great uncertainty, and that is why we realize that it is our historical duty to bring this coalition to success,“Added Merz.
The coalition of the outgoing office of Scholza composed of social democrats, the Green Party and the FDP liberals disintegrated on 6 November 2024. As expected, MEPs expressed distrust on 16 December, which opened the way to the announcement in the order of the fourth early elections to Bundestag in the history of the country, which eventually took place on February 23.
