Since the creation of Olympia (world’s largest bodybuilding championship), still in 1965, no Brazilian man won the title as an athlete. On the other hand, seven bodybuilders have already taken the country to the top of the planet (it is worth remembering that the female category was only included in the competition in 1980). Even with these results, the world “fitness” media even gives more value to men than women, according to Alcione Barreto.
In the opinion of the professional bodybuilding, the fact that this sport emphasizes aspects treated as male by society makes the merits focus on men. “You can see from the awards [enquanto Samson Dauda, campeão do Olympia 2024 na categoria Men’s Open Bodybuilding, foi premiado com US$ 400 mil, Andrea Shaw, vencedora da Women’s Bodybuilding, ganhou US$ 50 mil]the difference is absurd, even with the two being ‘bodybuilders’. For a man to reach the stage, it is much easier than for a woman. […] We still don’t have the credibility of men, “says the Women’s Bodybuilding category athlete.
One of the arguments that would validate the discrepancy cited in theory is the sale of products and the range that athletes have. However, Alcione sees this dynamic as a cycle: “They say it’s not salable. But it’s not salable because it is not disclosed. […] The ‘hype’ they do to the male side is not the same. In the female, they take only what is within the pattern of society. “
“Before a particular athlete sells supplement, some brand has to sponsor it. There are many who could sell products, but have not been discovered by any company. If no one talks about Women’s Bodybuilding, no one will know. Anyone would know the Wellness category, for example, if the media did not portray athletes in this category? Vendasable, but this was because there was an investment, “says the Bahian athlete.
For Alcione, this question “has improved little” since she entered bodybuilding, 13 years ago: “Everyone remembers Ronnie Coleman [maior campeão do Olympia entre os homens, com oito vitórias]but today’s people don’t know who Iris Kyle is [vencedora de dez títulos no Olympia, marca que nenhuma pessoa conseguiu atingir na história]”.
Olympia 2025
In October, Alcione will represent Brazil on the most important stages of world bodybuilding in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The athlete won her place for this year’s edition of Olympia after winning Mr. Big Evolution (also known as Portugal Pro) in July.
The bodybuilder reports that, according to the judges who arbitrated the competition, her physique “is ready for Olympia”. The intention, according to the athlete, is to present an even larger but equally conditioned physique: “I will present more details and more volume, besides having a very good head.”
Alcione premiered at Olympia in 2022, when she took the eighth place. In 2023, she took the third place. In the next edition of the tournament, health problems prevented her from achieving positions as good as in previous years.
In total, five pounds of muscle mass separate the version presented at Olympia 2023 from the physicist shown at Portugal Pro 2025. With the 69 kg increase to 74 kg, Alcione intends to overcome her own brand and integrate at least the first two positions of Women’s Bodybuilding, which have not changed for three years.
