A government program offers a financial incentive of up to 84 thousand euros to those who accept to move to one of the remote islands located on a European western coast. The measure aims to wage the sporation of these regions and revitalize local communities that face increasing challenges with aging and the escape of young people. This is an Ireland initiative to attract new residents to your coastal islands.
Incentives to rehabilitate vacant houses
According to the site specializing in Lifestyle Women’s Health, the initiative, launched in 2023 and expected until 2033, covers 23 Irish islands that have striking landscapes and a rich culture, but have been losing population.
The objective is to ensure “vibrant and sustainable” island communities, promoting economic diversity, cultural valorization and the improvement of infrastructure.
The incentive should be applied to the acquisition and rehabilitation of vacant or abandoned houses, which have been built before 2007 and are unoccupied at least two years before purchase.
Financial support can reach up to 50 thousand euros for unoccupied properties, with additional value up to 20 thousand euros for properties that need deeper works.
These dwellings must become the main residence of buyers or be made available for long -term lease, with approval from local authorities.
Beneficiaries are also committed to keeping the property inhabited or leased for a minimum of ten years. Otherwise, they will have to return the amount received.
Without the need for citizenship, but with conditions
Interested parties do not need to have citizenship of the country, but must have the right of residence in accordance with the rules of immigration in force. Applications are made online through the program’s official website.
Since the launch of the initiative by the end of March 2025, 35 applications have been submitted, of which 22 have already been approved.
The context and challenge of depopulation
These islands, which total about 2,700 inhabitants according to data from 2016, are part of a territory with enormous natural and cultural value. Some of these locations even served as a scenario to the film named the Oscars the spirits of Inisherin, released in 2022.
The program is a direct response to the deponent phenomenon, which particularly affects the island and rural areas of this country.
The strategy aims to encourage the return or arrival of new residents, ensuring that these communities maintain their vitality and be able to ensure a quality of life adequate to their inhabitants.
As with, the government responsible for this initiative believes that this financial support, coupled with the rehabilitation of housing heritage, can contribute to preserving traditional ways of life and creating sustainable economic, tourist and cultural opportunities in the long run.
