The president of the United States (Republican Party) received the head of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) at the White House, in a meeting marked by praise from the leader of the alliance and attempts to ease tensions. The organization’s summit will meet in Ankara, the capital of Türkiye, from July 7th to 8th.
The meeting takes place between Trump and NATO allies, after criticism from the US president regarding the lack of support of allied countries in the war against Iran.
At the leaders’ 5th meeting at the White House since Trump’s new term, Rutte referred to him as “leader of the free world” and stated that the organization’s members had objections “punctual” regarding war. He mentioned that up to 5,000 US planes have taken off from airports in Europe for missions in the Middle East since February 28 – the conflict with Iran.
Rutte also told Trump that “It would have been very difficult to deal with Iran without having Europe as a platform for projecting power for the United States”.
The North American said he didn’t need help for the war, but he wanted “your loyalty”.
The NATO chief also agreed with Trump for the attacks on Iran, stating that Tehran was “very close” of a nuclear bomb. He did not mention the unfulfilled objectives of the war, such as the dismantling of Iran’s military force.
