Nepal: former premier’s wife dies after home being set on fire in protest

The wife of former Nepal Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal died after protesters set on fire the politician’s residence since Monday (8/9) against government corruption and the ban on social networks.

According to local media, Chitrakar was taken to the army with serious burns, but could not resist. The case was initially released by the local portal Khabar Hub.

Manifestations

  • Protesters instituted chaos in Catmandu, Nepal’s capital, after provoking fires around the city on Tuesday (9/9). The protests began due to the revolt against government corruption and got worse after 19 young people were shot dead by security forces during clashes.
  • Car tires were also burned on the streets, while shock police were attacked with stones, according to The Guardian. One of the demonstrations was named “Generation Z” against the decision to ban sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Youtube and X.
  • Protesters broke into the Federal Parliament building in Catmandu, in the capital, and caused fires at the scene. The Prime Minister’s residence was also set on fire.

At least 19 people died in the acts. Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday (9/9) amid the wave of protests.

One of the demonstrations was named “Generation Z” against the decision to ban sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Youtube and X.

Letter to the President

Oli handed over the letter of resignation to President Ramchandra Paudel, claiming to recognize the serious situation of the country:

“Considering the extraordinary situation that prevails in the country and in order to facilitate new efforts towards a constitutional political solution and the resolution of the problem, renounce the position of Prime Minister, with immediate effect, pursuant to Article 77 (1) that of the Constitution,” he said in the letter.
