Olive oil has many health benefits. It has a unique, specific taste that gives food character. Unfortunately, counterfeits and low-quality mixtures are increasingly appearing on the market, which are difficult to distinguish from real olive oil at first glance. How not to be deceived? Here are some important things to pay attention to.
The demand for olive oil is growing, which means that more and more products appear on the market, the quality of which is not very desirable. Unwitting consumers pay and buy olive oil that has very little in common with real olive oil.
How to recognize original olive oil? Don’t be fooled
In order not to be deceived, it is worth paying attention when buying olive oil:
- Nomenclature: only genuine olive oil can be labeled as “extra virgin”.
- Manufacturer and region: Before buying olive oil, look for more detailed information on the bottle. Check what region it comes from and who makes it. The more detailed the information on the packaging, the more likely it will be of good quality.
- Certificate: on the shores look for the label “PDO”, i.e. “Protected Designation of Origin” for Italian products, it will be IGP, i.e. “Indicazione Geografica Protetta” or ecological certificates. This type of information determines the region of origin and confirms the authenticity of the product.
- Cena: original olive oil, especially produced in renowned regions, is not the cheapest product. The low and favorable price should make you suspicious. A 500 ml bottle of quality olive oil usually costs at least 7-10 EUR.
