With 99.859% of the votes counted, the conservative candidate for president of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, opened up enough of an advantage over the leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez to become president of the country.
The data comes from a report by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and was released late in the evening on Tuesday, the 23rd.
Fujimori increased the distance over Sánchez to 43,386 votes and totaled 50.118% of the valid votes, against 49.882% for his rival, which makes it mathematically impossible for the left-wing candidate to be able to reverse the situation.
Sánchez announced on Tuesday that he would not recognize Fujimori’s possible victory if the request to annul votes abroad is not accepted.
The second round of the presidential election in Peru took place on the 7th.
