Turkish police shot and killed a suspect linked to the Islamic State in raids near Ankara. The intervention is related to the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara in July.

Turkish police shot and killed a man suspected of links to the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group during a raid near the capital Ankara. Security sources told local media on Wednesday, TASR reports according to the AFP agency.

The police intervention from early Tuesday morning is related to the preparation for the July NATO summit in Ankara. In two weeks, leaders from 32 member countries will meet, including US President Donald Trump.

Raiding and shooting

The shooting took place in the town of Sazagasi, 100 kilometers south of the Turkish capital, during simultaneous operations in which police detained more than 200 people, the DHA and IHA news agencies reported. The authorities have not officially commented on the case.

The suspect was shot by a special police unit at the address where he lived with his wife. According to the IHA, the pair opened fire first and the man died during the shootout.

Warrants and arrests

On Tuesday, the Turkish Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the issuance of arrest warrants for 241 persons. During the raids, anti-terrorist police units detained 209 people, of whom 56 were identified as suspected IS members, the rest allegedly belong to several far-left organizations that Ankara labels as terrorist groups.
