Commentator José Eduardo Cardozo and the businessman and former federal deputy Alexis Fonteyne discussed, this Thursday (18), in The Great Debate (Monday to Friday, at 23h), if the departure of União Brasil puts the base of President Lula in Congress.
The party set a period of 24 hours for “under penalty of practice of party infidelity.”
Cardozo understands that the government will succeed in recomposing its base.
“União Brasil has every right to leave the government. Obviously, the government will try to recompose its base in other ways and will achieve, I have no doubt that,” he said.
“União Brasil has always had a pendular movement according to convenient coexistence. The center has this pragmatic movement and sometimes is neither direct electoral calculation, because it has a lot of time for the elections and the research shows that Lula is ahead,” he continued.
Fonteyne estimates that the impact of union output will be felt.
“Union is an important party for the government base, but it is a century party and they have a very accurate reading of the pendulum of power. So basically they are disembarking from the government because they feel that the Lula government will not be the winner in the 2026 elections and are anticipating,” he said.
“Union and other parties have already stated that they are leaving, they asked their ministers to leave,” he continued.
