Northwest Spain is struggling with two forest fires that hit more than 1600 hectares of land. 116 brigades and dozens of aircraft help.
Firefighters with the support of soldiers fought on Saturday in Northwest Spain with two forest fires, which caused drought and high temperatures. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
In the surroundings of Lugo in the Autonomous Community Galicia fought with a fire of 82 fire brigades and 25 aircraft. The fire broke out on Thursday and has so far destroyed approximately 1,400 hectares of land, the regional government said in its statement. Meanwhile, 34 fire brigades and 17 aircraft fought with another fire around the neighboring city of Ouranse, which also broke out on Thursday and destroyed approximately 240 hectares of land.
Both fires were classified as “status two”, signaling a threat to built -up areas. On Friday night, dozens of people evacuated the authorities, but most of them have returned home. Fires arose at a time when Spain records higher temperatures than usual, and in some parts of Galicia, they have reached more than 30 degrees Celsius in recent days. Temperatures are expected to fall later on Saturday and the firefighters will help to fight fire.
AFP recalls that Western and Northwest Spain, along with neighboring Portugal, hit this summer devastating forest fires. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), four people were killed in both countries, and almost 330,000 hectares of land and nearly 250,000 hectares in Portugal burned in Spain for several weeks.
