Government increased spending by 10 billion annually “without justification”

Mariana Leitāo, leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL).

The president of the Liberal Initiative accused the Government of promoting successive increases in expenditure, without any justification, in the State Budget for 2026. Mariana Leitão speaks of increases in the order of 10 billion euros per year.

“We grow every year by around 10 billion” in State spending and “was the Liberal Initiative, which proposed measures with a fiscal impact of two billion per year, radical?” – he asked Mariana Leitãoin a municipal campaign speech.

For IL, “Radical is brutally increasing expenditure every year without ever being able to justify where it comes from”.

We continue to be unable to resolve redundancies in public spendingwithout reducing useless administrative acts, without reducing paper for paper’s sake, without reconsidering the functions that the State must reduce and those that it must maintain”, he added.

Mariana Leitão said that the “state reform ended before it began”the result of “a State that cannot close the cycle, and is reduced to distributing what little there is”, with “low investment, low productivity, impossible licensing and an economy with low added value that cannot pay our most qualified staff”.

“Because as long as the State insists on controlling everything, it will continue to fail in almost everything,” he stated.

According to Mariana Leitão, “there is a brutal increase of more than 300 million euros in other direct taxes, a growth of 259%, without any explanation in the report”, and the “Government is filling holes in the most hidden taxes, without explaining where it will get all this revenue”.

“And to feed which State? The same State as the Socialist Party”, the liberal leader further accused.
