To in the 21st century it practically disappeared from Polish registers. Parents were no longer willing to give them to their sonsand yet it was a hit of the Polish People’s Republic. Later, they were worn by the hero of the cult series, who may not have sinned, but was very nice.
Of course, it’s about Waldemar (who among us doesn’t know Walduś Kiepski from “Świat According to Kiepskich”). Interestingly, contrary to common associations, the meaning of this iconic name is very noble and it has a long history in our country.
The name Waldemar came to Poland already in the 19th century, but it was only after World War II that it began to spread widely. It was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. There were boys in almost every school classroomwho would wear them (maybe you have a grandpa, dad or uncle who has them).
Today, however, the situation has changed dramatically. The name, which was one of the hits of the Polish People’s Republic, is fading into oblivion despite the return of fashion for traditional names (e.g. Jan or Antek).
However, unlike them, Waldemar is not happy about it (statistics show that in recent years only a dozen or so boys have been named this way each year). In 2024, it was chosen 15 times, which is still better than in 2023, when 12 children received it.
Contrary to the associations that have arisen around it in pop culture, its etymology is extremely noble. The name Waldemar is of Germanic origin and consists of two words: waltan – to rule and mari – excellent, therefore meaning “an excellent, famous ruler”.
Men named Waldemar are independent and extremely ambitious. It’s numerological 5and this number is a symbol of freedom, freedom of choice, development and high intellect.
Men named Waldemar are decisive, charismatic and rarely care about other people’s opinions. They are rebels who are determined to achieve their goals. They do not hesitate to make their dreams come true. They quickly climb the professional career ladder if they want to, because they do not do anything against themselves.
Men named Waldemar can choose from several dates on which they can celebrate. Usually, however, the date that falls first after the birthday is chosen (this is the custom, but you can of course do it differently).
Waldemar’s name day is most often celebrated: May 5 and December 11. Some Poles decide to celebrate it also: January 16, however, this is not such a large group.
