North Korea fires ballistic missile towards the east, says South Korea

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the east, South Korea’s military said on Wednesday (local time), without providing further details about the launch.

Earlier, South Korean news agency Yonhap said the launch was toward the sea off North Korea’s east coast. North Korea last launched ballistic missiles on May 8, when it fired several short-range missiles from its east coast.

North Korea rejects the international ban supported by the US and South Korea, among others, on the development of its ballistic missiles.

The launch comes ahead of a visit to South Korea next week by leaders attending an Asia-Pacific economic forum, including US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

North Korea unveiled its latest intercontinental ballistic missile this month in a parade attended by the Chinese premier.
