What was supposed to be a special trip for mother and daughter turned into a true test of patience. Sophie, 45, spent around 1,600 euros on a four-day getaway to the European island of Terschelling, in the Netherlands, but the result was far from what she expected.
Sophie told the story to the Dutch newspaper AD. The idea was simple: to offer the mother a break after years of routine, small visits and hurried calls. “I thought it would be nice to take her for a little walk. Since my father died, she hadn’t left the house again”, he explained.
Driven by enthusiasm, she booked the trip impulsively, booking a cabin in the middle of high season. He thought his mother would need some convincing, but he couldn’t imagine what would happen next.
Three generations, one failed plan
The trip to this European island began with optimism. The mother reacted with joy to the invitation and Sophie decided to take her nine-year-old daughter too, making the trip a meeting of three generations. The plan seemed perfect, until the moment they disembarked the ferry.
“I rented bicycles to go to the house, but my mother refused,” he said. “He told me if I fall, it would be worse for me, because at home I always ride my bike.” From then on, everything started to go wrong. “Nothing pleased him. He complained about his back, saying the bed was hard, the wind was unbearable and the dunes were too steep”, recalls Sophie.
Trip marked by criticism and silence
During one of the walks, the mother simply stopped walking. “She refused to continue. I was irritated, my daughter was silent for the rest of the day. And I felt horrible”, she admitted to the source cited above.
Trying to save the trip, Sophie planned a final surprise: a visit to the bar where Hessel, a well-known artist on the island, used to sing. “Her eyes lit up when I told her about it. But when I called, they told me he hadn’t acted in years. At that point I realized nothing was going to happen.”
A bitter return
Back at home, Sophie received an unexpected phone call from her mother. “She called me to thank me for the trip and, at the same time, said that she had been ill. She said that she no longer feels the need to go on vacation, that what she values most now is her bed and her house”, he revealed.
The conclusion came with a mixture of disappointment and irony: “You could have told me that before I spent 1,600 euros”, said Sophie. “But I learned something important: sometimes, the getaway you dream of is someone else’s nightmare”, he revealed, quoted by .
Today, he says he has found a new way to please his mother, much simpler and cheaper: “She is happy when I play rummikub with her at home. I think it was an expensive but effective lesson.”
