São Paulo is experiencing a boom in the calendar of sporting and cultural events. Stadiums, arenas and race tracks have full schedules, reinforcing the city’s role as the country’s main tourism and entertainment hub.
Second Gustavo Pirespresident of SPTuris and guest of CNN Esportes S/A This Sunday (26), the intense operation of arenas such as Allianz Parque, Neo Química Arena, MorumBis, Pacaembu and Autódromo de Interlagos proves the strength of the sector in the city.
High demand has caused the events calendar to reach its occupancy limit.
All of these spaces no longer have dates for events. It’s a large supply, but São Paulo’s demand is even greater. There is still room for more spaces in São Paulo.
According to him, the growth of leisure and entertainment tourism complements the capital’s historic business tourism.
“São Paulo continues to be a reference in business tourism, responsible for 60% of the country’s fairs. But it has also managed to consolidate itself as leisure and entertainment tourism”, he reported.
With the expansion of events and audiences, the city’s equipment continues to operate at an intense pace.
All these spaces are operating, operating very well, giving positive feedback and they have events every weekend practically simultaneously. So, this is proof that there is a supply being increased, but in accordance with the demand in São Paulo.
Favorite of mega events
Today, it is São Paulo’s main mega-event center. According to , the space managed by the city hall hosts around 400 events per year, including races and large shows.
“Interlagos belongs to the city of São Paulo and it is very important to say that it has a surplus and hosts 400 events per year, that is, more than one per day on average. Of course, the 400 events are not like Formula 1, but there can be four or five events on the same day simultaneously”, he said.
The space underwent a modernization process and today combines motorsports and entertainment. Among the festivals mentioned by Pires are Lollapalooza and The Town, as well as major international shows.
According to him, the space has become a reference among organizers of large events.
Interlagos is today the main mega-event venue in São Paulo. Every event for more than 40 thousand people, whether sporting or musical, comes to us to host Interlagos. It’s already difficult to have a date available.
Public management and partnerships
The president of SPTuris reinforced that the race track is in surplus and that there is no need for concession or privatization at the moment: “The city of São Paulo understands that the equipment supports itself and that it is a good deal for the city hall to keep Interlagos under its control.”
Despite this, he recognizes the value of partnerships with the private sector.
“Some partnerships are being considered, not for concession or privatization, but for brand exposure. Management believes that the equipment is positive and, with the municipality as owner of the asset, it yields good results”, he admitted.
Pires defends the case-by-case management model.
I am very much in favor of concessions, privatizations, PPPs and privatization as a whole, but not necessarily all concessions and privatizations are correct or well done. It depends on the situation and has to be analyzed on a case-by-case basis.
Pacaembu and new spaces
Pires positively evaluated the concession process of the , now under private administration.
“It’s been very positive. In addition to being modernized, you relieved the public sector, which is the great point of a concession. Pacaembu, unlike Interlagos, was not having a surplus and became a white elephant. Today it already hosts major shows and events”, he informed.
He highlighted that the city’s spaces complement each other.
“Granted equipment such as Vale do Anhangabaú, Pacaembu and Anhembi talk to Allianz Parque, Morumbis and Interlagos itself. They do not cancel each other out, they provide more options for the city”, he analyzed.
Incentive to clubs
Regarding the construction and modernization of arenas by Brazilian clubs, Pires defends the incentive with fiscal responsibility.
“I’m more in favor of incentives, of course, you have to aim for the public good, so, undeniably, you have to understand the return that this gives to the city. And a big team that brings a large audience to the stadium, I think it always brings a very positive return to the city”, he highlighted.
The leader reinforced that balance is essential.
For us to encourage teams to build their stadiums and pay for their stadiums, perhaps with one or another exemption, some way for the public authorities to help, but not burdening the public authorities directly, is very positive. What I don’t think is possible is for public authorities to build a stadium for a private team.
