The record of an unknown object flying over the sky of the Federal District caught the attention of Brasilia residents on Monday night (10/27).

Images circulating on social media show the luminous object cutting across the sky of the capital. Some internet users commented that it could be a “meteor” or even a “comet”. The record was shared by the Ceilândia Muita Treta page.

Other Brasilia residents also raised the hypothesis that it could be a “fireball” or an “asteroid”.

To the Metropolises, Marcelo Domingues, member of the Brasília Astronomy Club, clarified that the phenomenon in question is, in fact, the re-entry of space debris.

Any object launched by humans into space, and which remains in orbit around the planet, is considered space debris and can return to Earth at any time. Most of this debris burns completely due to the heat generated by friction with the air, often creating a luminous spectacle visible from the ground.

“The Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network [] is still investigating to try to identify which object it was. There was a re-entry alert for today, close to that time from a Chinese satellite, but we still don’t know if it was him”, explains Marcelo.

Residents of Minas Gerais, Bahia and Goiás also reported the passage of a luminous trail in the sky this Monday.

Comet

It could also be seen this Sunday (26/10) in the Southeast and Central-West regions, according to the Brasília Astronomy Club.

Discovered in January this year by the Mount Lemmon observatory, in Arizona (USA), the greenish-tailed comet has been visible in Brazil since October 18, but will have its maximum viewing point in DF this Sunday. It will remain apparent in the Brazilian sky until November 12th.

The comet was visible this Thursday (10/23) in the North and Northeast regions. After passing through the Central-West sky, it will be visible in the South region next Thursday (10/29). After that, it must go around the Sun and disappear.
