Towels are among the most demanding textiles in our homes. Their loop structure retains moisture and organic particles, creating an environment conducive to the multiplication of bacteria and fungi. Research conducted in 2017 by scientists from the University of Arizona showed that as many as 80% of towels used for three days or longer contained fecal bacteria or Staphylococcus aureus.
These results clearly show that standard low temperature washing is not always enough to ensure proper hygiene. Researchers also noted that towels can be more contaminated than… a toilet seatwhich clearly emphasizes the importance of regular care of these textiles.
Experts recommend washing towels every 3-4 uses at a temperature of 40-60°Cdepending on the degree of dirt and the health situation of household members. During periods of infection, it is worth reaching for a higher temperature to more effectively reduce the number of microorganisms. Then we should dry them in a ventilated place or in a tumble dryer.
Already in the 1980s, a team of scientists from the University of Arizona showed that that washing in both cold and hot water, including those with the addition of bleach, reduces the number of bacteria by over 99.9%. Washing towels at 60°C removes dirt visible to the naked eye and neutralizes microorganisms that may be a source of unpleasant odors, skin irritations or infections.
Towels washed at lower temperatures, e.g. 30-40°C, may retain their visual freshness, but bacteria remain in their fibers and quickly multiply again in the humid environment of the bathroom. Therefore, experts recommend using 40°C in your daily routine when slightly dirty, and reaching 60°C every few washes.to restore full hygiene to the towels and extend the life of the fabric.

A good solution is also to avoid fabric softeners, which stick to the fibers and reduce their absorbency. Instead, you can add a tablespoon of baking soda or a bit of vinegar to the laundry during the rinse cycle – they will naturally soften the fabric and remove detergent residues.. A simple trick is to shake out the towels before hanging them up, as this loosens the fibers and shortens the drying time.
Towels that are not thoroughly dried after washing quickly lose their freshness and become a source of unpleasant odors. Research conducted in 2011 by University College London shows that drying fabrics at temperatures above 55°C significantly reduces the number of bacteria, and in combination with prior washing at 60°C ensures almost sterile conditions of use. This means that drying towels in a tumble dryer at medium temperature improves hygiene and restores their elasticity and softness, which is difficult to expect from traditional drying in a humid bathroom.
We can also hang towels outdoors, because UV rays also have a bactericidal effect. However, it is worth remembering that too long exposure to intense sunlight may weaken the fibers and accelerate the fading of colors. Therefore, the best results are achieved by combining both methods: air drying and then a short cycle in a tumble dryer, which loosens the fibers and gives them fluffiness.
