Amazon Preservation Project

The Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve preservation project, led by brigadista Jone Anderson (squad leader and fire manager), took a decisive step towards its expansion. After the publication of an interview with Anderson in the first edition of the Liga-T school newspaper this school year, the material was sent to the Brazilian Minister of the Environment, Marina Silvaand raised awareness among authorities, resulting in mobilization for the allocation of resources.

The Minister’s advisors got in touch and, based on a needs assessment, a proposal was presented to the manager of ASL (Sustainable Landscapes of the Amazon). The proposal foresees the release of significant funds to purchase equipment, carry out training and supply kits to structure the brigades.

Resources are in the allocation phase, and the initial plan to create three community-based centers in the Reserve has been expanded to five or six, aiming to serve more communities. Jone Anderson also expects a new contract as an occasional collaborator with the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), which will guarantee continued technical support for actions and training.

The newspaper that published the interview is linked to the school magazine in which the student participates Sofia Pereda17 years old, who is in his final year of high school. Sofia recently won third place in a global Chinese writing competition and represented China and Portugal in the 2025 Lunar New Year.
