Dogs with blue fur have been spotted roaming Chernobyl, the Exclusion Zone that surrounds the epicenter of the infamous nuclear disaster. The animals did not change color due to a mutation caused by decades of radiation; the explanation is much more banal, if a little unpleasant.
The famous, the shadow of worst nuclear disaster in historyhave become one of the canines of the rest of the world.
But that wasn’t why three of the members of the canine population that lives in the exclusion zone that surrounds the site of the 1986 disaster appeared, on October 6th, with blue fur.
Speaking to IFLS, program researchers confirmed that the georeferenced images were authentic. After a few failed attempts to capture the colorful animals, the team ended up finding the likely culprit: a portable toilet nearby.
“It seems that they were rolling around in a substance that accumulated in the fur”, the veterinarian explained to IFLS Jennifer Betzmedical director of the program.
“We suspect that this substance comes from an old portable toilet that was in the same location as the dogs; however, we were unable to confirm positively this suspicion. But in no way are we saying let this be radiation related in Chernobyl,” he added.
The dogs will most likely have been roll in a chemical liquid azul bright than escaped from a damaged portable toilet. Despite the alarming appearance, researchers think that the “painting” will not cause them harm lasting.
“The dogs look healthyjust like everyone else we encountered during our work in Chernobyl. I suspect that as long as they don’t lick off most of the substance, it will be practically harmless,” Betz said.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that dogs with unusual colors have been reported in former Soviet territory. In 2021, residents of Dzerzhinsk, Russia, were surprised to see people wandering the streets near an abandoned chemical factory.
In this case, it was suspected that the animals they had rolled around in copper sulfatea light blue compound used in industry.
The appearance of blue-haired dogs in Chernobyl gives the story a sensationalist touch, but these blue dogs are far from being so strange as they appear at first glance.
After the nuclear disaster of April 1986, around 120,000 people from the surrounding areas and the neighboring city of Pripyat were forced to evacuate.
When leaving their homes, Many left their animals behind pet, who, against all odds, managed to surviveand , in the abandoned lands around the degraded plant.
Jennifer Betz and a team of experts recently visited the region as part of the Dogs of Chernobyl initiative, a project by the nonprofit organization that monitors and sterilizes the descendants of the animals left behind.
Since 2017, the organization has already sterilized more than a thousand dogs and catsin a continuous effort to control the semi-wild population.
The association, made up of volunteers, also made a point of clarifying that the blue color had no relation to the temporary marks used to identify sterilized animals.
“During sterilization campaigns, we apply a temporary marker in colored chalk on the top of the head — green, red, blue or purple — to identify dogs that have recently undergone surgery. This mark disappears in two or three days”, explains Betz.
“This coloring It’s just on the top of the head and it is completely different from the dogs we found, which were practically covered in blue from head to toe”, details the veterinarian.
In the absence of human intervention, many other species have thrived in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Studies indicate that the region is home to robust populations of wild boar, red foxes, songbirds and raccoon dogs.
Perhaps the most notable population at the site are wolves, which appear to be able to increase their chances of surviving cancer.
