- Several drones were spotted over the Belgian military base Kleine-Brogel at night.
- The base is important for the Belgian army and NATO.
- According to unconfirmed reports, it is one of the places where US nuclear weapons are stored.
- Similar drone overflights have also occurred in other military zones in Belgium.
On the night of Saturday, several drones were spotted over the Belgian military base Kleine-Brogel in the town of Peer. According to reports from the DPA and Belga agencies, this is an important military facility that is also used by NATO, writes TASR.
“The detection system is working, the investigation is ongoing,” Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken wrote on the X platform on Saturday, revealing that authorities had obtained the drone footage. He also stated that will meet with the police next week to jointly assess the threat and take the necessary measures to track down and apprehend the drone operators.
Annual NATO exercises focused on the defense of the Alliance’s territory with the help of nuclear weapons were held at the Kleine-Brogel military base in Flanders in October. Approximately 2,000 soldiers took part in them. According to unconfirmed reports, this air base is one of the places in Europe where US nuclear weapons are stored, writes DPA. Belga also states that from 2027 F-35 fighters will also be located here.
Drones were also spotted at night in the military area in Leopoldsburg near Kleine-Brogel. The details are still unknown. The mayors of Peer and Leopoldsburg discussed these incidents on Saturday. The Belgian also recalls that last month the authorities noticed suspicious drones over the Elsenborn military training camp and the barracks in Marche-en-Famenne.
In recent months, drones have been observed over critical infrastructure in several European countries, and the states suspected Russia of the overflights. It is currently unclear who is responsible for the drone flights over Kleine-Brogel, or what their purpose was.
