Angela Merkel received an honorary doctorate from the Weizmann Institute of Science for her support of Israel, the fight against anti-Semitism and the development of international partnerships during her tenure.
The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rechovot, Israel, has awarded former German Chancellor Angela Merkel an honorary doctorate for her contributions to global diplomacy and unwavering support for Israel, the institute announced Monday. The institute said the award honors Merkel’s “unprecedented contribution to global diplomacy and international partnerships”, as well as her “solidarity and friendship with Israel” and her determined efforts in her fight against anti-Semitism.
Support for Israel and science
“Under her leadership, Germany has significantly deepened bilateral relations with Israel and expanded military aid as well as defense, technology and scientific research partnerships,” the institute said on its website. He also highlighted Merkel’s key role in stabilizing the economy during the eurozone crisis.
The institute recalled that in 2008, Merkel spoke in the Israeli Knesset as the first German chancellor, where she expressed her commitment to Israel’s security and the fight against anti-Semitism.
Scholarship in her honor
The Weizmann Institute of Science is one of the world’s leading research centers. During Merkel’s last visit to Israel as chancellor in 2021, he named one of his scholarships in her honor.
Iranian missiles damaged the institute’s campus and destroyed dozens of research buildings during Israel’s war with Iran this year. They caused an estimated damage of 530 million euros.
