Amid the COP30 discussions in Belém do Pará, the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) reinforces its commitment to the climate agenda and proposes greater private sector participation in environmental decisions.
Ricardo Alban, president of the entity, highlights the importance of implementing the SB COP (Sustainable Business COP), an initiative that aims to establish a formal channel for recommendations from the private sector in discussions on climate and sustainability. Alban emphasizes that the industry represents only 4% of carbon emissions, challenging the perception of the sector as the main responsible for pollution.
Energy and sustainable development
The energy issue emerges as a crucial point in the discussions. Alban defends a balance between the use of traditional and renewable resources, highlighting Brazil’s potential in clean energy. The CNI representative argues that the energy transition requires time and resources, defending a pragmatic approach that considers the needs of economic development.
In relation to energy costs, Alban points out that Brazil has natural advantages that could result in cheaper energy, citing amortized hydroelectric plants and the growth of renewable sources. He highlights the importance of investments in storage technologies to optimize the use of intermittent energy.
Regarding the review of tax benefits, the CNI is open to dialogue, but criticizes the proposal for linear cuts. Alban argues that a case-by-case analysis of incentives is necessary, considering the particularities of each sector and region, to avoid increasing inequalities.
