Oscar considers retirement after heart changes – 12/11/2025 – Sport

After routine tests carried out by São Paulo for the 2026 season detected cardiac changes in midfielder Oscar, the 34-year-old athlete was considering the possibility of retiring.

On Tuesday (11), the Morumbi club published a note on social media stating that the player showed changes in tests and was taken to Einstein Hospital Israelista, where he remains under observation. According to the club, his situation is stable.

Revealed at the Tricolor base and back at the club at the beginning of this season after more than a decade playing abroad, Oscar has a contract valid until 2027.

In a post on social media, the midfielder thanked the messages of support he received in the last few hours.

“Everything will be fine, God willing,” wrote the athlete, who must still undergo further tests this Wednesday (12).

The possibility of early retirement was discussed during an interview with Carlos Belmonte, São Paulo’s football director.

“If Oscar is well, fit, we count on him for the 2026 season. If Oscar is not [bem] or make a personal decision not to play anymore, we will support the athlete’s decision”, the director told journalists on Tuesday night, after the draw for the groups for the 2026 Campeonato Paulista.

“Oscar is a boy who deserves all our respect, very dedicated, so let’s wait. We count on Oscar in 2026, if he’s ready. If he decides to stop, we’ll negotiate a way out,” he added.

According to people linked to the club, the midfielder’s heart problem would not be something completely new, with the routine examination only serving as a warning.

A counselor from São Paulo told Sheet in which, in informal conversations with the technical committee about a month ago, the athlete’s continuity had already been called into question.

According to this advisor, when commenting on Oscar’s possible return to the pitch, a member of the technical committee had already doubted the midfielder’s continuation as a professional player.

Since returning to São Paulo, the player has dealt with a series of injuries.

Oscar has not played since July 19, in a match against Corinthians valid for the Brazilian Championship. That day, he suffered fractures in three vertebrae. In October, when he tried to return, he injured his left calf.

Coming from the youth teams to being one of the main team’s highlights in the campaign that resulted in winning the 2008 Brazilian Championship, the midfielder took legal action and left São Paulo in 2010, heading to Internacional.

In 2012, he moved to Chelsea, where he was two-time Premier League champion (2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons).

At the end of 2016, he was announced as a reinforcement of Shanghai Port, in China, where he remained until his return to São Paulo. During his period in Asia, the midfielder had one of the highest salaries in world football, estimated at 24 million euros (R$146.7 million) per year.

For the Morumbi club, since his return, he has played 21 games, scored two goals and provided five assists.

With the Brazilian national team, he won the Confederations Cup in 2013 and played in the World Cup in 2014. He was the scorer of Brazil’s only goal in the 7-1 defeat against Germany.
