The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “spent the night very well”, after undergoing surgery for an “incarcerated hernia”, at the Hospital de São João, in Porto, where he was admitted after feeling unwell, Maria João Baptista, president of the board of directors of that hospital unit, told journalists this morning.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is expected to be hospitalized for two days at Hospital de São João and recovery could take two weeks.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa underwent emergency surgery on Monday night at Hospital de São João, in Porto, after feeling unwell when he returned from Amarante, from the funeral of Engineer António Mota.
According to doctor Elisabete Barbosa, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had symptoms of “intestinal occlusion and vomiting” and that the surgery “was decisive” and carried out “in a timely manner”.
On December 28, 2017, the President of the Republic underwent emergency surgery for an umbilical hernia, not hospital Curry Cabral, in Lisbon, which forced him to cancel his schedule until January 1st.
