There are those who set up the nativity scene in the living room, in the garden or next to the pine tree. But Joaquim Kinito, a Portuguese diver living in Spain, has been taking the Christmas spirit to a very different setting for 15 years: the bottom of the sea off the coast of Galicia.
Every year, before Christmas, Joaquim descends into the cold waters of the Atlantic to install underwater nativity scenes among fish, algae and rock formations. The tradition gained such notoriety in the region that many friends and fellow divers decided to join the initiative.
This year, the action had 32 participants. One of the nativity scenes was placed off Vigo, in Cangas do Morrazo, with the collaboration of 22 volunteers. The second will be submerged throughout the Christmas season near Vilagarcía de Arousa, thanks to the support of 10 other divers.
