We had ups and downs with the government, says Motta

President of the Chamber states that the situation is stabilized and that the Executive is committed to taking up remaining amendments

The President of the Chamber of Deputies, (Republicanos-PB), said that the relationship with the president’s government (PT) was full of ups and downs during the year, but it has a “deep” respect for the PT member and that the situation is stabilized. The statement was made over coffee with journalists this Friday (Dec 19, 2025).

“There are ups and downs. And this is very natural because each Power has its own way of acting. It is not written in the Constitution that one Power has to agree with the other. I think there has to be harmony, dialogue and when it comes to disagreeing, one needs to understand the other. I don’t need to support everything from the Executive”said Motta.

The relationship between the Executive and the Chamber has been strained for months. It started in June. In November, Motta also sanction of the project that exempts anyone earning up to R$5,000 from IR (Income Tax).

Furthermore, the and the approval of the project that reduces penalties for those involved in the 8th of January worsened the climate.

On Thursday (Dec 18), the president of the Chamber to welcome the new Minister of Tourism, Gustavo Feliciano, appointed by União Brasil with the support of the head of the Chamber. The atmosphere was relaxed.

AMENDMENTS

Another point of tension between the Executive and Congress during the year was the delay in committing amendments. The slowness angered deputies and senators and led to delays in voting on some projects.

When asked, Motta said that the Minister of Institutional Relations, , is working to pay for the amendments and stated that the Legislature’s effort to vote on the Budget this year is to prevent the government from starting 2026 under contingency and hindering the transfer of resources in an election year.

“I think that by the end of the year we will be able to make up for this lost time and end the year with favorable budget execution. This is precisely the fight to vote on the Budget today. It is so that we don’t have this next year. So, we hope that the budget is approved today, sanctioned and then we will have normality in budget execution for 2026″he declared.
