Sparkling wines from Bairrada buck the trend and register slight growth this year

Despite the drop in wine consumption, the sale of sparkling wines managed to register a slight increase this year. In Bairrada, the Christmas and New Year period once again concentrates almost half of sales by sparkling wine producers.

The wine sector is in decline, both in Portugal and internationally. But sparkling wines, which in Bairrada registered a slight increase, are escaping the trend.

The largest sparkling wine producer in Bairrada will sell 2.5 million bottles this year. The destination is, essentially, the national market.

A bottle of sparkling wine made in the Bairradina region costs an average of 5 euros, but prices can vary between 3.50 euros and 100 euros.

The brut sparkling wine is the sales leader for the Christmas season, New Year’s Eve and gatherings.

Bairrada has 110 registered producers, of which more than 50% produce sparkling wine.

Sparkling wine, until now associated with moments of celebration, is trying to gain a place at the table, accompanying all types of meals, throughout the year.

For 2026, the region’s expectation is to grow moderately, at a time when the sector is experiencing constraints both in the production and sale of wines, and to increase the average price of each bottle, in order to be able to repay the producer more fairly.
