A simple trick to peel boiled potatoes for salad at lightning speed

Christmas without potato salad? Never. But peeling a really large amount of boiled potatoes can take more time than you’d like in the pre-Christmas prep rush. And so every little enhancer available comes in handy. Let’s do it a little differently this year, it will pay off.

Easy, fast and effortless – these are slogans we often hear in advertisements. But these little tricks that only take a few seconds actually work this time. Preparing a Christmas salad for the whole family, even a few days in advance, will literally become a piece of cake.

Rapid temperature change

One of the tricks of experienced housewives is a quick change in temperature, which literally works wonders for the skin. There is nothing more complicated than transferring freshly cooked potatoes from boiling water to an ice bath.

In addition, it will only require a bowl of ice water (by ice water we mean ideally water with ice cubes) and physics will take care of everything else. A quick change in temperature will “blow off” the skin, and all we have to do is remove it easily by pulling out the rest of the potatoes. In most cases, you won’t even need a knife.

Cut the peel

Maybe you don’t have ice in the freezer right now, so you’ll be looking for another quick option. This is also in our offer. This time it will be about cutting the skin before you put the potato in the pot. Run a knife all the way around each of them to cut the skin all the way around.

It doesn’t matter if you choose the long side or the short side of the potato, it will work either way. Then just let the potatoes cook in the usual way, and as soon as they are soft and cool enough, you just need to gently turn each half of the skin and remove it by gentle pressure.

An old tea towel will also help

But that’s not all. Maybe you don’t have ice and forgot to cut the potatoes in advance in the rush of other work. Nothing is lost. Place the boiled and cooled potatoes in an old tea towel that you won’t regret getting dirty and rub them between the layers of fabric. As in the previous cases, the peel will separate and go down one or two.

Not just for salads

In addition to saving time when peeling, all the mentioned methods have another benefit in the form of undamaged and smooth boiled potatoes. This is also sometimes useful, especially if you want to serve a slightly unconventional salad in which the potatoes will be cut into neat slices, or you will use this side dish in another way – perhaps just cut in half. In any case, avoid the unsightly nicks and scratches from the knife that you would cause by frantically trying to peel every millimeter of skin individually.

You can’t do without traditions

How you prepare the potato salad, what you add to it, whether you replace some high-calorie ingredients with lighter ones is up to you. After all, every family has their best salad recipe, without which Christmas would not be complete. And so it’s right, it’s about traditions and our lives are based on traditions, whether we admit it or not.
