Brazil will reinforce Lula’s speech at a UN Security Council session

The Brazilian government is expected to comment on the situation in Venezuela during a meeting of the UN Security Council (United Nations), scheduled for Monday (5).

According to the CNNAmbassador Sérgio Danese, Brazil’s representative at the UN, should reinforce the speech of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) who, on Saturday (3) – the same day that the United States attacked Venezuela –, .

The United Nations Security Council meeting was requested by Colombia following US military action in Venezuelan territory that resulted in the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

The council is made up of five permanent countries – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – and another 10 that are elected for two-year terms. Colombia is the current representative of South America. Brazil is not currently part of the group.

According to UN rules, non-member countries, such as Brazil, can participate in council meetings and request the floor. They, however, do not have the right to vote.

This will be the third time that the UN Security Council has met to address the situation in Venezuela. Two other meetings were held in October and December last year.

US attack on Venezuela

The military operation to capture Nicolás Maduro on Saturday, with explosions and reports of smoke in Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, lasted around 90 minutes.

US troops arrived at the complex where Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were staying. The action was led by

Minutes after the capture, Maduro and his wife were taken by helicopter over the sea to the military ship USS Iwo Jima, which had been in the Caribbean for months. Hours later, around 6:40 pm (Brasília time), he was escorted by federal agents, handcuffed and wearing gray clothes.

Maduro was taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he remains detained. The unit has already received other prisoners involved in high-profile federal cases.

Next steps

Nicolás Maduro must attend one (5) for the first time, Brasília time.

In the indictment filed on Saturday, the US Department of Justice claims that Maduro and allies transformed Venezuelan institutions into a corruption scheme fueled by drug trafficking.

New positioning of Brazil and Celac meeting

This Sunday, Brazil, along with Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Spain, . The countries’ joint note also expressed “concern” about any attempt at “government control.”

The position was published hours before a meeting of Celac (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) to discuss, among other topics, the situation in Venezuela after the United States attack.

The meeting, which took place virtually and behind closed doors, ended without a public statement from the bloc. According to CNN found out from Brazilian government sources, the lack of a position ends up exposing a political divergence about what happened between the nations that make up the group.

Celac was created in Mexico in 2010, which brings together 33 countries in the region. The alliance seeks Latin American and Caribbean integration, in addition to political, economic and social coordination between the countries.

A CNN found that, during the meeting, however, Itamaraty, through Chancellor Mauro Vieira, maintained a position against the capture of Maduro and against US military action in the neighboring country.
